Haida people have occupied Haida Gwai since time immemorial. This is an archipelago off British Columbia's west coast. I learned so much on that one visit and developed a great appreciation and respect for these amazing people and their valiant existence. We visited centuries old totem poles and watched the carving of a new Reconciliation Pole to be placed at University of British Columbia. This area is a moist wet climate, a temperate rain forest. The trees have moss clinging to the sides, even the rocks. We kayaked around the bay and stopped at a beach where we visited an ancient village site. At the beach the breeze and warm air made us almost feel the spirit of the souls who lived and made their existence from the ocean. This rock was near the ocean. The patterns, textures and colors instantly drew me to it. The patchwork of many colorful mosses and lichens was fascinating. I can see how the environment would inspire the beautiful bead work on leather featured in Indigenous Art.
