St. John’s Wort – Surrey, BC Canada

Hypericum perforatum or St John’s Wort, has been used in traditional European medicine as far back as the ancient Greeks. It is a sprawling bush that has visual interest from spring to fall.  Delicate yellow flowers in late spring evolves into reddish berries by late summer.  Fall brings red leaves depending on the weather.  We hard prune the entire plant every year yet it returns with a vengeance, not only growing larger but putting out sprouts all over the garden.  It can be invasive except the seasonal changes are so interesting that I put up with it.  The plant makes a great cut  in any bouquet because it is hardy and constantly changing.
